What’s in a rePOR Touch Screen?
While ABDA doesn’t supply or directly support POR hardware, we do have recommendations for the best touch screens to use in Depot environments.
Depots are tough on equipment - moisture, dust, heat, cold, and sticky substances will all eventually reach your screens. Choosing the right type is the first step to minimizing downtime. This page gives a great visual of the types of screens, but here are the basics:
Resistive (Recommended) • Also called AccuTouch 5-wire resistive, these screens respond to pressure, not stray stimuli like water droplets or insects. They work with gloves or a stylus, hold long-term accuracy, and are built for harsh conditions.
Capacitive (Not recommended) • While commonly used in Point of Sale in restaurants or grocery stores, these screens often struggle in Depot settings. They may not register gloved touches or stylus input and can react unpredictably when wet.
Maintenance Matters! Even the best screens need care. Keep cables secure and clean the screens regularly with an anti-static cloth dampened with water or mild detergent—never spray directly or use abrasives. A dirty or damaged screen can misregister touches, making it unusable.
Maintaining and choosing the right screens will save you money, reduce errors, and keep transactions running smoothly.
