Should I leave rePOR computers on overnight?

Great question! Our goal is to help you keep rePOR running reliably and efficiently, with minimal downtime. Regular light maintenance prevents expensive repairs and lost sales time.

There are a number of processes that run overnight for rePOR to ensure that daily operations are not affected. These include:

  1. Updates to the BREG (Product Registration list);

  2. rePOR Application Updates; and

  3. Other data syncs, such as Handling Commission rates.

If your computers are turned off or have gone to sleep, none of these updates and syncs can happen. That means your BREG data can quickly become out of date, and you may need to wait for an application update to apply next time you start up rePOR.

Here are some tips for general maintenance:

1. Leave Computers On Overnight

To allow automatic syncing and updates:

  • Do not shut down computers at the end of the day.

  • Ensure they are connected to power and not asleep (screen may turn off, but the PC should stay awake).

  • Windows and rePOR updates typically occur overnight when the systems are idle.

  • If you notice computers restarting overnight, that’s normal — updates may require a reboot.

2. Check Windows Updates (Monthly)

Even though updates install automatically, it’s good to verify once a month:

  1. Open Settings → Windows Update

  2. Click “Check for updates”

  3. Make sure there are no failed updates or messages about pending restarts.

If updates repeatedly fail or the system shows errors, notify your IT support or hardware provider.

3. Check Disk Health (Every 3 Months)

Disk errors can cause system freezes or data loss.
To run a quick check:

  1. Press Windows + E → Right-click Local Disk (C:)Properties → Tools → Check

  2. If prompted, allow Windows to check the drive for errors.

4. Watch for Performance Issues (Ongoing)

Signs of trouble include:

  • Programs or sales screens loading slowly

  • Delays when scanning containers or printing

  • Frequent error messages or system restarts

If this happens:

  • Restart the computer if possible.

  • Ensure the network cable is firmly connected.

  • Report repeated slowness or freezing to your IT support for investigation.

5. Clean the Computer and Work Area (Every 1–2 Months)

Dust and grime can shorten the life of computers and peripherals.

  • Turn off and unplug the computer before cleaning.

  • Wipe down cases, monitors, and keyboards with a soft cloth lightly dampened with water or a gentle cleaner.

  • Use compressed air to remove dust from vents and fans.

  • Keep the area around the computer clear of dirt, bottles, and liquids.

6. Server Station:

On the computer that acts as your local server, it should:

  • Stay powered on, even overnight.

  • Have automatic Windows updates enabled.

  • Not be used for browsing, email, or personal tasks.

  • Be kept in the cleanest and coolest area possible.
