Earthware & SkipTheDishes Join Forces: ABDA Cheers on the Sustainability Revolution!

CALGARY, AB, Sept. 22, 2023 – The Alberta Bottle Depot Association (ABDA), representing 217 independently owned and operated bottle depots in the province, would like to extend its heartfelt congratulations to Earthware Reusable Inc. on the commencement of their new pilot program with SkipTheDishes. SkipTheDishes will now help eco-minded takeout diners find restaurants that are using Earthware's sustainable packaging. With a click of the top tile on their app, it will filter Earthware providers. This marks a significant step forward in promoting eco-friendly initiatives across Alberta and is a milestone for Earthware, SkipTheDishes and Alberta Bottle Depots in their mission to stop one million single-use containers from going into landfills.

The ABDA has been proud to partner with Earthware in a joint pilot since April 2023, in which 13 of our member depots in Calgary have served as collection hubs for Earthware’s reusable takeout containers. These containers, after use by consumers, are returned to these Depots, thoroughly cleaned and sanitized, and then dispatched to various participating restaurants in the city. Some Depots in other communities, including Airdrie, Banff, and Canmore, are embracing the Earthware revolution by welcoming returns of these reusable containers, increasing the total number of Earthware return Depots to 16 so far in the province.

"We've seen firsthand the commitment and innovation Earthware brings to the table," remarked ABDA’s President, Jerry Roczkowsky. "Our collaboration with Earthware has fostered a seamless and efficient system for returning and processing reusable containers and, together with Earthware, Depots are poised to play a pivotal role in reducing single-use plastic waste in Alberta."

The province's bottle depots, crucial to Alberta's high-performing deposit return system, witness the return of over 2 billion beverage containers annually, constituting about 85% of the containers sold in the same timeframe. Integrating Earthware’s reusable containers into this system ensures the continuation of Alberta's dedication to environmental consciousness and sustainability.

"We are optimistic about the immense potential of this partnership. Seeing SkipTheDishes, Canada’s homegrown food delivery giant, support Earthware’s efforts, is indeed a commendable milestone. This type of collaboration paves the way for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for Alberta and beyond," Roczkowsky added.

The Alberta Bottle Depot Association is proud to stand in support of this endeavour that propels Alberta toward a more sustainable future and a more circular economy. We wholeheartedly applaud Earthware for its pioneering vision and are excited about the positive outcomes we will collectively achieve in the near future.
